The Value of Showing Up to Industry Events

The Value of Showing Up to Industry Events

Our founder, Harry Stephens, always loved the quote, “The world is run by people who show up.” He believed the backbone of any industry is its people and that it is important to “show up” and connect with people that make our industry great. Whether it’s a conference, trade show, or networking meetup, he knew being present in these spaces has a significant impact on the industry and the growth of a business.

Our President, Scott Stephens, has followed this lead in supporting the growth of our industry as an active board member of the Imaging Network Group (INg). Datamatx was a founding member of INg when, more than three decades ago, a few C-level executives from print/mail service providers got together to share best business practices and ways to grow their businesses. Today, INg’s membership includes 56 print, mail, and electronic service providers and 25 vendor partners (print technology, software, and business services) that meet to discuss key business and industry trends at a high level.

While the technology discussions and the industry have changed over the years, the intention to keep INg a C-level networking group has not. Twice a year, high-volume, mid-sized print, mail, and electronic service providers come together to discuss trends, technology, and overall business issues. What does this organization and others like it offer the companies that make it a practice to show up and participate?

Here are four:

  1. The ability to build relationships in a way that virtual meetings can’t replicate. Even if you have already interacted with leaders in your industry on some level (by Zoom, Teams, email, phone, or on social media), meeting in person can solidify those business relationships.
  2. Access to the latest trends, technologies, and strategies directly from industry leaders which can open up new possibilities for your business.
  3. The “people who run the world” are the ones who actively engage. By attending events, you’re not just a spectator—you become part of the conversation, part of any needed change.
  4. Visibility in your industry that can lead to valuable partnerships and opportunities.

Ultimately, showing up is about seizing opportunities. Those who participate get to shape the future of their industries while building a stronger network and gaining insights that set them apart. As we prepare to enter into the New Year, let’s remember the quote our founder lived by his entire career: If you want to lead and grow, don’t sit on the sidelines—show up.
